The longest tunnel in the world

After the hair raising (on my part) drive down the mountain, we stayed overnight at Laerdalsoyl.  The next day we experienced the world's longest tunnel. At 24.5 kilometres (15.2 miles) long, the road provides a ferry free connection between Oslo and Bergen, not that we plan on visiting either city this trip. Every 6 kms the area widens into caverns and parking bays that are fitted with special mood lighting in order to stop fatigue.

A little later, we went through another tunnel that was 11.5kms long and had changing coloured lights at about  the 6km mark.

We've been through so many tunnels that they all blur together. Many of the ones up north are unlined and dimly lit which can be very hypnotic. Further south we found a better quality of tunnel as in lined and painted so the light is more reflected. We've seen off ramps, on ramps, single and double lanes (mainly for steep slopes) and even roundabouts. A couple of the best encounters have been coming out of a long tunnel onto a really high bridge across a fjord then straight into another long tunnel.

Another overnight stop, this time at Rullestad campground with a lovely view of the lake.

The following day we headed to Stavanger and on the way we passed the amazing Langfoss waterfall . The water cascades down a towering mountain, a total distance of 612 metres before it jets out into Åkrafjorden at the base of the mountain.

Next stop Stavanger and our last week in Norway
